Use of winter tires in Hungary and neighboring countries

Blog

The use of winter tires and snow chains is mandatory in neighboring countries.

Hungary:
The mandatory use of winter tires has not yet been introduced in our country. However, depending on the weather and road conditions, the public road operator may place a "Use of snow chains is mandatory" sign on some road sections. You may only drive on such a road section with a vehicle that at least has snow chains on the tires on the driven axle. The use of studded tires on public roads is prohibited in our country!

Austria:
Between November 1 and April 15, for passenger cars and trucks not heavier than 3.5 tons, in the case of wintry road conditions in Austria, winter tires with a tread depth of at least 4 mm on all wheels or snow chains only on the driven axle are mandatory. However, snow chains may only be used if the roadway is covered by a continuous layer of snow or ice and the snow chain does not damage the road surface. In the case of vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 tons, it is mandatory to use winter tires with a profile depth of 5 mm for radial tires and 6 mm for diagonal tires, at least on the driven axle. Furthermore, the driver must keep snow chains in the vehicle.

Czech Republic:
Between November 1 and April 30, the use of winter tires with a profile depth of at least 6 mm is mandatory in the Czech Republic for vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 tons, at least on the driven axle, on the road sections where this is indicated by signs. The use of snow chains is also indicated by signs.

France:
In France, the use of winter tires is generally not mandatory, but snow chains are a mandatory accessory, which must be used on sections marked with signs.

Croatia:
In case of icy road conditions or more than 5 centimeters of snow, it is mandatory to keep snow chains in the car in Croatia. In winter road conditions, it is mandatory to use winter or four-season tires at least on the driven axle. The use of snow chains is mandatory in the area of Lika and Gorki Kotar.

Luxembourg:
Winter tires are optional, but recommended. It is interesting that the use of mixed equipment (e.g. front for winter, rear for summer) is prohibited.

Germany:
There is no mandatory requirement. The use of snow chains is regulated by signs. Tires with M+S and snow protection are classified as winter tires, the minimum profile depth is 1.6 mm. In the case of trucks and buses, it is sufficient to install winter tires only on the driven axle.

Italy:
Depending on the weather, the use of winter tires and snow chains may be mandatory on the roads leading to the ski slopes. The use of winter tires is mandatory in the Aosta Valley between October 15 and April 15.

Switzerland:
In Switzerland, winter tires are not mandatory, but equipment suitable for road conditions is required. If someone causes an accident or gets stuck with summer tires, in addition to high fines and compensation, they can also expect to pay rescue costs. The use of snow chains is regulated by signs.

Serbia:
Between November 1 and April 1, if the weather conditions justify it, the use of winter tires or snow chains is mandatory in Serbia.

Slovakia:
In the case of passenger cars, there is no date, however, if the road is covered by a continuous layer of snow or ice, the use of winter tires with a profile depth of at least 4 mm on all four wheels is mandatory in Slovakia. Regardless of weather and road conditions, trucks and buses must use winter tires at least on the driven axle between November 15 and March 31. Important! Compliance with the prescribed (70 meters) following distance is measured on the highways!

Slovenia:
Between November 15 and March 15, the use of winter tires is mandatory in Slovenia, but two of them are enough. In the case of more than 5 centimeters of snow, snow chains are also mandatory, which can be checked at the border.

Romania:
In Romania, from 2011, the use of winter tires is mandatory between November 1 and March 31.

Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia:
Between December 1 and March 1, winter tires are mandatory on all vehicles.

Sweden, Norway:
Winter tires and snow chains are mandatory for locals, although almost everyone uses studded tires in winter.

Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Poland, Great Britain, Russia:
